UC Diversity Pipeline Iniative Leadership Conference

In March 2007, the University of California Office of the President, Division of Health Affairs, together with the University of California, San Francisco Center for Gender Equity and the UCSF Student Activity Center hosted a conference addressing issues facing minority women who are under-represented in the health professions and who may be interested in pursuing future academic careers. This conference, now known as the UC Diversity Pipeline Initiative, has evolved into an annual event that has become extremely popular with the students who have attended. Students from all 15 of UC's health sciences schools are invited to participate.

The University of California Diversity Pipeline Initiative Leadership Conference 2010, was held April 9 - 11, 2010 in Berkeley, California. Sponsored by the University of California Office of the President, Division of Health Sciences and Services, the University of California San Francisco Center for Gender Equity and the UCSF Student Activity Center, additional funding was provided by UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Los Angeles, UC San Diego, UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, as well as The California Wellness Foundation and The California HealthCare Foundation.

The conference was designed to promote an understanding of the barriers that face women interested in career academic paths in general, and within the UC health sciences system in particular, with an emphasis on the unique barriers facing women of color who are under-represented in the health professions. The program helped students explore careers in the academic path and acquainted them with successful role models. Workshop topics included professional development, skill building and networking with a diverse array of faculty leaders and presenters. Speakers and faculty mentors were invited based on their commitment to fostering equity and inclusion in the academic pipeline. We were honored that President Yudof opened the conference with welcome remarks and Dr. Vivian Pinn, director of the Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), delivered the closing keynote address.
