Forklift Trucks
Forklift Trucks are one reason our manufacturing industry can be flexible, profitable and organized. Forklifts make it possible to maneuver in tight cornering places, lift remarkably heavy loads and move them easily from point a) to point b). This maneuverability is due to rear-wheel steering. This means with no “caster action” there’s no need to apply steering force in order to have a constant rate of turn.
Instability is characteristic of forklift trucks. The forklift balances when it is carrying a load. Its center of gravity varies with each load and so it cannot negotiate turns with loads in the air. A heavy lifted load will plop the thing right over. The load limit of the forks decreases with elevation and undercutting of the load. Its for these reasons that forklifts can’t carry people unless they are contained within a cage, “cherry picker” or other specific safety equipment.
Ratings for forklift trucks have specified maximums. They have specific forward centers of gravity. To find out what it is, one needs only look at the nameplate that it came with. It is never wise to exceed these posted limits.
In some places tampering with this specification plate can get you a fine, or into some real trouble with its manufacturer.
Because warehouses and distribution centers are such dangerous places, forklifts are especially designed for safety when making fast turns and efficient movements in small spaces. These centers couldn’t function well without them.
In locations where the materials supplies are stored on drive-in/drive-through racking, forklifts needs to be able to go into any storage bay with pallets positioned sometimes in very deep, tall rows. Pallets are especially designed to be lifted by the forklift trucks and so large quantities of products are carefully stack in a manner that makes them easy to retrieve when the forklift comes through.
More often than not, forklift drivers are provided with guides into this bay called guide rails. These are placed on cantilevers. The pallet sits on this rail, and so the load can be easily lifted up by the forks. Warehouses and cargo bays are designed with forklift functions in mind. Forklift drivers have to be really experienced in order not to cause damage or harm when operating them.
When these storehouses, warehouses and cargo bays are designed, they need to know ahead of time exactly the measurements of the forklift trucks they are going to use. They need to know the dimensions including the mast width, truck width and any other variable that might be found when comparing one forklift with another.
Forklift manufacturing companies are commonly found in many countries. Forklifts come in all sizes and dimensions for any variety of job.
